4 Reasons to Zumba

Want to get fit? Don't like the usual workouts? Zumba may be for you! This incredibly popular, dance-based exercise feels more like a party than a workout.

Zumba is a group fitness dance class with Latin roots. The moves are inspired by the dance styles salsa, merengue, and flamenco. However, “the average Zumba class may seem more like a global tour of music and dance,” says Elsa Tavares, a certified Zumba instructor who teaches throughout Rhode Island. “Zumba has evolved to include pop, hip-hop, country, African, Bollywood, and other genres of music.”

Here’s why you should give Zumba a try:

  1. You don’t need to be a dance pro.
    Anyone who loves music and wants to dance can benefit from Zumba. “People who don't have a dance background sometimes do the best,” says Elsa. "They gain confidence by embracing the music, and then they start to see and feel physical changes in their bodies.”
  2. You’ll burn a lot of calories. 
    Zumba classes alternate fast, intense dance moves with slower sequences. This challenges your body more than working out at a steady pace. Just ask Elsa. She's lost 100 pounds through Zumba and has kept off the weight by teaching Zumba classes.
  3. You might forget that you’re exercising.
    The first and most important rule that Elsa tells her students is to “have fun.” If you’re someone who gets bored by exercise, don’t worry about that with Zumba. The dance moves, sequences, and playlists are always changing.
  4. You’ll make your heart stronger.
    Adults need 150 minutes of heart-pumping aerobic activity per week for good health, and Zumba classes can help you meet that guideline.
