Save Money on Fresh Fruits and Vegetables

With a few tips and tricks, shopping for fresh fruits and vegetables can be as easy on the pocketbook as it is healthy and delicious.

  1. Buy in season.
    When produce is in season, there’s more of it available—so it’s more affordable.
  2. Time it right.
    Visit the farmers' market near the end of the day. Vendors are often willing to offer discounts on produce remaining on their hands as closing time nears.
  3. Buy in bulk.
    It's often possible to get a case price on fruits and vegetables. Ask your local farm stand or the produce department of larger groceries, and stock up, then preserve or freeze your bounty.
  4. Grow your own.
    A small raised bed or a few pots on a patio can yield a much greater harvest than you might imagine. Start from seeds for even greater savings. 

Storage and Prep Tips

  • Bag fresh fruits and vegetables separately from meat, poultry, and seafood products.
  • Refrigerate all produce that is purchased pre-cut or peeled.
  • Wash fruits and vegetables under running water just before eating, cutting or cooking (even if you plan to peel the produce). Avoid using soap, detergent, or commercial produce washes.
  • Dry produce with a clean cloth towel or paper towel, as that may further reduce any bacteria.
