How Steven Made Time for Fitness

Steven White couldn’t find an exercise routine that worked.

“My biggest problem was finding time to get to the gym,” said Steven, who owns John F. White & Company, Inc., a wholesale heating supply company in Providence. “I didn’t have time during my workday, and at night, something would come up or I’d be too tired to go.”

Then, three years ago, he decided to start going to the gym before work, arriving at 6:00 a.m. “In the morning, my slate was clean, and it was easier to fit in a workout,” said Steven. “I’ve lost 20 pounds, and I’m much more flexible than I was.”

Steven added to his routine earlier this year, when his sister Laurie gave him a Fitbit®, a wearable fitness device. “I track my steps at the gym, then all day at work. At my business, it’s just me, so I’m the counterperson, the salesperson, and the delivery person. I can often get in about 5,000 steps a day at work.” If Steven doesn’t reach his goal of 10,000 steps with his morning exercise and his workday, he stops off at Garden City to take a walk after work.

“The Fitbit has been fantastic. It gives me an extra push,” said Steven. “Sometimes I take heating part fittings and use them to mark each lap I do around the shop. I have 15 of the fittings, so I try to do 15 laps.” 

Steven said that making exercise a regular part of his day was the most important change he made. “Now it’s just part of my routine. And even though I’m up earlier in the morning, I feel so much better when I get out of bed.”
