Preventing Falls at Home: Safety Tips for Every Room

Falls are the leading cause of injury for adults 65 and older—and many happen right at home.1 The good news is that small changes can make a big difference. By taking a closer look at each room in your home, you can find simple ways to help reduce your risk of falling and create a safer living space.2
 

Entryway

  • Keep floors clear of shoes and bags.
  • Use a non-slip mat inside the door.
  • Make sure the area is well-lit, especially at night.

Living Room

  • Keep cords and wires out of walkways.
  • Fasten scatter rugs securely to the floor.

Kitchen

  • Store frequently used items within easy reach.
  • Wipe up spills right away.

Bathroom

  • Consider a shower chair for added stability.
  • Place non-slip mats in the tub and on the floor.
  • Install grab bars near the toilet and in the shower or tub.

Bedroom

  • Keep a lamp or light switch within easy reach of the bed.
  • Clear clutter from the floor and bedside area.

Stairs and Hallways
