Simplifying Dental Care

Going to the dentist can be complicated, costly, and uncomfortable. However, oral health affects your overall well-being, so you shouldn’t let that discomfort deter you from seeing your dentist. In fact, delaying care could make matters worse1. If you’re feeling overwhelmed by caring for your teeth, understanding your dental coverage, or finding a dentist, consider these 3 Cs to simplify dental care:
Care:
If you care for your teeth properly, your experience at the dentist could be less painful—and less expensive. Most of us had the basics taught to us at an early age, but here are some tips and reminders2:
- Brush your teeth twice a day and floss daily to help remove plaque between teeth.
- Try to limit food and drinks that are high in sugar, such as candy and soda.
- Don’t ignore symptoms like tooth pain, bleeding gums, or sensitivity.
- See a dentist once a year for an exam and get regular cleanings, even if your mouth feels fine. Some problems don’t show symptoms right away.
Coverage:
Having dental coverage can make it easier to get the care you need before small issues become bigger, more expensive problems. BCBSRI dental plans cover an array of preventive services for children and adults, such as annual exams and regular cleanings, and every plan includes in- and out-of-network coverage from coast to coast.
BCBSRI members also have access to exclusive discounts through Blue365®3, which can help you save on oral care products and more.
If you already have a BCBSRI dental plan—either one you purchased on your own or one offered through your employer—you can find details about your coverage in the Dental Benefits section of your online account.
To access your dental plan info:
- Log in to your BlueCare Connect account.
- Select “Browse All” from the Benefits tab.
- Select “Dental Benefits.”
If you don’t have dental coverage yet, don't wait. BCBSRI offers a range of options, including plans that are a good fit for those who only need regular checkups and cleanings, as well as plans with more comprehensive coverage for people who expect to need additional dental work. Choose a plan based on your needs, budget, and stage of life.
Blue Cross Dental Direct plans provide coverage for basic services that can help you keep your mouth healthy, including an annual exam, cleanings, and X-rays for no additional cost, as well as:
- National coverage coast-to-coast
- Coverage for out-of-network care
- No waiting periods for exams, cleanings, and fillings (waiting periods may apply for other services)
- A third cleaning at no additional cost for expectant mothers
Your next steps:
- Review plan options and apply here.
- If you have questions or need help comparing plans, call (401) 459-5550 or 1-855-690-2583 (TTY: 711).
- Prefer to speak with someone face to face? Come by a local Your Blue Store.
Choices:
Finding a dentist shouldn’t feel like another obstacle. With BCBSRI dental plans, members have access to one of the largest dental networks in Rhode Island—9 out of 10 dentists in the state are in network. That means there’s a good chance you can find a convenient option close to home or work, while also making the most of your benefits.
If you already have a BCBSRI dental plan, you can use the Provider Finder tool to search for an in-network dentist near you.
