Enter New Fitness Classes with Confidence

Someone rolling up a yoga mat

Trying a new fitness class can help you work your muscles in different ways, meet new people, and keep you motivated. But it can also feel intimidating to start a new class in a new place. Know what to expect and what to bring with you so you can enter your first class with confidence.

Being a BCBSRI member will help you get started

  • Get a what you need: Blue365® offers exclusive member deals and discounts to help you save money on gym memberships, fitness equipment, apparel, activity trackers, footwear, and more.1
  • Get going: Rhode Island is home to a wide variety of exercise facilities, but our favorite fitness classes are offered (at no added cost!) at Your Blue StoreSM. You can choose from dozens of classes each week at our locations in Cranston, East Providence, Lincoln, Narragansett, and Warwick. See what classes are offered and register here.

Deciding where to go

A great way to learn about different fitness centers is to visit their websites and look for class schedules, cancellation policies, dress codes, and expectations. If you still have questions, consider giving them a call to ask:

  • What can I expect from my first class?
  • What class do you recommend for beginners?
  • What do most participants wear to class?
  • What should I bring with me?

Wondering which workout is right for you?

BCBSRI fitness manager Jennifer Turchetta works with fitness instructors at Your Blue Store to make sure members can enjoy a wide variety of challenging and engaging classes. Here’s a breakdown of some common exercise classes (including ones offered at Your Blue Store) and how Jennifer recommends preparing.3

Important! You should always bring a water bottle with you every time you exercise (this includes participating in the classes listed below).

Gentle movement

Yoga: Classes vary in intensity and style, but all practices unite the body and mind. The movements are intended to improve your flexibility and strength.

You may notice different types of yoga on a class schedule:

  1. Chair Yoga: accessible yoga for all, including those with limited mobility
  2. Flow Yoga: dynamic style of yoga that aims to link breath with movement and mindfulness
  3. Gentle Yoga: slow-paced practice focused on relaxation and stretching
  4. Yoga-lates: a combination of yoga and Pilates
  5. Yoga Sculpt: encourages participants to use hand weights for their movements
  • Bring: a yoga mat. Consider bringing yoga blocks, a sweat towel, or a blanket for extra support.
  • Wear: comfortable, stretchy clothing. Some prefer to wear grip socks, while others prefer to take classes barefoot.

Meditation: Pairs gentle movement with mindfulness and relaxation

  • Bring: a cushion, mat, or blanket
  • Wear: comfortable clothing

Pilates: Tones your muscles through strength and resistance training. Classes are either performed on a mat using bodyweight and props, or on a reformer using springs for resistance.

  • Bring: a mat (if taking a mat Pilates class). You may also want to ask ahead of time if your instructor provides a Pilates ring, resistance bands, or other props needed for class.
  • Wear: comfortable, stretchy clothing and grip socks
